Dot NAME Domains

Started in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level domain extension is the only one supposed to be for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are known by. At first, solely 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to reserve john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed third-level names remained running.
